Do you need to do a Tax Return

Not sure if you need to lodge a Tax Return or not, our checklist will help you to work out your obligation.

Tax Return Obligation

If any of the situations below apply to you then you may need to lodge a tax return for the year.  If you go through this and are still unsure, then it is best to book an appointment and let us hep you to work it out.

If you don't need to lodge a return

Even if you do not need to lodge a return, you still need to let the Australian Taxation Office know this.  You can contact them directly, or we can do this on your behalf for a small fee of $55.

Checklist

Income of more than $18,200

Income from Employment with Tax withheld - check your last payslip or your Payment Summary for this information

 Interest Income with Tax Withheld - check your internet banking or ask your bank the question.  Note: Even if a Term Deposit has been renewed, and you have included the interest in the renewal, this is still your income at the date of rollover.

 Did you receive a Taxable payment from Centrelink? - If so, check if tax has been withheld.  If not then if your total income from all sources exceeds $18,200 you may need to do a tax return and pay tax.

  Did you receive a Lump Sum from Superannuation? - If so, then it is likely you will need to do a return.

  Were you not a resident of Australia for the full tax year? - If so, and you received any income from Australia, then you will likely need to lodge a return.

 Did you pay any tax installments throughout the year? - You need to lodge a return.

 Were you under 18 and received income from sources other than employment? - The most you can earn from other sources is $416

 You carried on a business during the year - You need to lodge a return.

 You received income from dividends or other investments - You need to lodge a return.

 You received income from a rental property - You need to lodge a return.

 You made a loss, or have a carried forward loss from a prior year - You need to lodge a return.

 You are entitled to a distribution from a trust or partnership - You need to lodge a return.

 You qualified for income averaging as a special trade (sportsperson, artist, etc) or Primary Production - You need to lodge a return

 You are entitled to a refundable offset - EG.  Private Health Cover, Seniors and Pensioners.  Then you need to lodge a return.
